Ah, Spring that wonderful season of renewal and rebirth. Much like writing; Spring brings to mind newly budding ideas, forming and taking shape under caring compassionate hands. Like a gardener tending his plants with gentle concern while making certain that weeds don’t overtake the beauty, a writer must do the same thing. It is often difficult to see the weeds for a weed and not beautiful flowers when a new work is first flowing from the tips of fingers tapping in rapid fire succession on the keyboard like raindrops on the concrete. Many times a writer plunders the garden in an effort to create something more beautiful and complicated than the simple beauty that is quietly begging for attention. Allowing too much description to enter into writing is as big a no-no as letting untold weeds take over a lovely flower garden. Carelessness is no excuse for ruining a story with unnecessary tornadoes of words and hurricanes full of grammatical errors. A writer must remain as ‘on guard’ for the poisonous insects that creep unheeded onto the page stealing the true meaning of the piece. Water your imagination with a maze of flowers, plant your garden with more than just roses and daisies. Once an idea has formed in your mind, place it with loving care onto the page, paying close attention to the way it forms and shapes itself to the new growth under your fingers. When the idea has grown to its full height prune out the thorns, cut back the dead branches and keep only the beautiful flower garden of words your unique voice can produce. Enjoy this season and make the most of your writing time. If you’ll tend your writing like a gardener you will be astonished at the beauty you can create through discipline and routine inspections. Your piece can be one of sunshine and warmth on a spring afternoon, not too hot as in August and not too cool as with April. Spring brings the world back into balance with a renewal of all living things. Add a little creativity to a page and see where it takes you. Have a blessed spring season. |
